Living a Lifestyle of Prayer: Have a Talk with God

Have a Talk with God

Welcome to Living a Lifestyle of Prayer. My name is Linda Steppenbacker, and I’m going to be reading Have a Talk with God. Let’s begin with prayer.

Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You so much for everyone listening today, and I pray that You would impart a special blessing—a special revelation—into their hearts as You extend Your invitation for them to enter into conversation with You. I thank You that it’s so beautiful that Your heart longs to converse with us, to have a relationship—a real and living relationship that gives life to us. You are a good Father. We love You. In Your name, we pray, Amen.

The Scriptures for today are Jeremiah 33:3 and Proverbs 4:20–22. Jeremiah 33:3 says, “This is what the Lord says—He who made the earth, the Lord who formed it and established it—the Lord is His name: ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’” Proverbs 4:20–22 says, “My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.”

Grab your Bible, a pen, your journal, and a warm drink. Find a quiet spot away from distractions and sit down to have a conversation with your Father—your best friend and the lover of your soul. He is waiting for you with so much love and anticipation. If you’re carrying a burden today, clear your mind of those cares and concerns by laying them at His feet. With confidence and expectation of hearing His voice, ask Him to speak to you today. Read Matthew 7:7–12 and John 10:1–17. Jesus loves you so much and has given everything for you. Let these words from His own mouth fill you with faith and confidence that you are His and that you hear His voice.

Hello, dearly loved one. I want to tell you a quick story about how I came to begin talking with God. Perhaps you have a similar story. Growing up in the church, I was always taught that quiet time with God meant reading the Bible and praying to Him, but I missed out on something life-changing—the intimacy that comes from a back-and-forth conversation with God, where I ask Him questions and He answers. I didn’t even know what I was missing. But once I found it, my relationship with God went to a whole new level. He became so very real to me, and now I long to hear from Him all the time.

Maybe you’ve come to this realization too. If you haven’t and you want to get started—or even if you’ve been doing this for years—this is for you. Think with me for a moment about how conversations happen with your close friends. You share, then your friend shares. You might ask each other for advice, laugh together, or pour out your hearts. It’s a two-way conversation, where you hear each other’s hearts. And it’s the same in your relationship with God. He loves you so much more than you can comprehend, and He loves to talk with you. He is always with you. He is humble and gentle in spirit, and with Him, you will find rest for your soul. He is for you, not against you. He is the Good Shepherd who cares for His sheep. He is a good Father who loves to give good gifts to His children. And nothing—nothing—can separate you from His love.

So how do you have a conversation with God? This might feel foreign or unattainable, maybe even something reserved for the “super spiritual,” but it’s not. Talking with God is natural and will deeply enrich your relationship with Him. As a Christ-follower, you already have the Holy Spirit inside of you. One of His roles is to guide you into all truth. He will teach you all things, only speaking what He hears from Jesus, and He will tell you what is yet to come. Doesn’t that sound like something you’d want to hear? I know I do.

Be intentional about listening for Him. One of the best ways to do this is through journaling. Writing in a journal is a powerful way to hear from the Lord. You can record what He says to you, what you say to Him—your entire conversation. These words of life will become treasures to revisit, especially during hard times. So how do you begin? Ask God a question. Just as you wouldn’t sit in silence with a friend, don’t do that with God. Ask Him something, and He will answer. Write down what He says. Go back and forth with Him, just like you would with your closest friend.

If you want to try this now, close your eyes and place your journal on your lap. Imagine you’re in your favorite place with your dearest friend—the one you trust with everything. Maybe you’re on a park bench together, or at your favorite coffee shop. You feel relaxed and peaceful. Now imagine that friend is God, sitting beside you. Ask Him a question. Listen. He will respond. He’s your best friend—He’s going to answer you. Write it down. Write every word of your interaction.

Hearing God may take practice at first, but be patient—it’s worth it. After asking Him, listen for His response and trust that He will answer. You may hear from Him through a voice in your spirit, a picture in your mind, or a passage of Scripture. Pay close attention not only to what He says, but also how He says it. Record His words precisely, because even the way He speaks carries meaning. God often surprises us with His tone—He can be funny, playful, incredibly tender. He speaks in a way that you can understand. But remember: He will never contradict His Word, so always cross-check what you hear with the Bible.

Once you’ve heard from God, thank Him. Make a habit of writing down every conversation. These records will become powerful reminders during trials or dry seasons—when you feel far from Him, or when you need to remember His deep love for you. These journals may even become a legacy for your children someday. I once heard a story of siblings who didn’t want their father’s possessions when he passed—they just wanted his prayer journals. That’s the kind of legacy you can leave.

Matthew 4:4 says, “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” Just as you wouldn’t go a day without eating, don’t go a day without hearing from God. His words are life.

Have you been making it a priority to hear His voice? Are you looking for Him in your everyday life? If not, it’s never too late to start. Begin your day with your Daily Bread. Ask Him a simple question like, “Lord, what do You have for me today?” You’ll be surprised by His goodness. Don’t stop there—keep the conversation going throughout the day. Ask Him questions as you go about your tasks, and stay alert for how He might be speaking to you. It could be through a friend’s encouragement, a verse that jumps off the page, a repeating number, or even a vivid dream. God is always speaking. He has so much He wants to tell you. Jeremiah 29:13 says, “You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.”

Let’s pray.

Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You that Your heart for us is connection. I pray that each person listening would sense Your longing for them and respond with longing in return. Thank You for drawing us with loving-kindness. You are gentle, kind, and full of goodness. Help us to step out in faith today—to begin or begin again our conversations with You. Let us think of You first when challenges arise. Let us ask You first, and trust what You say. You know all things, and Your Spirit leads us into all truth. I bless every precious listener with amazing, life-giving conversations with You. We love You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I wrote this devotional because this practice changed my life. When I learned to hear from God and talk with Him regularly, He became so real to me. I had always read about Him in Scripture, but He had felt distant. Once I began engaging Him in conversation, He became my best friend, my perfect Father, and my guide. I often tell my kids: this is the most important skill I can pass on to them. If they can hear God’s voice, they can live a successful life in every way. I pray you’ll pass this on to your children too.

I love you. Thank you for listening
